A burl is a irregular growth on the trunk of a tree, typically is grows around an area where there is insect damage or a broken limb. Within the burl growth the grain lines run in all directions, producing wood with interesting twists and turns. This pen is made from a burl from a northern sugar maple tree.  

Small but substantial it is equipped with a Cross type refill which will write for an amazingly long time before you will need to replace the refill which can be easily found at office supply stores everywhere.
